Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow. There's actually nothing on this list I want to buy. I'm not into
Hannah Montana, I've never seen an episode of
Bleach, I wasn't a big
Married with Children fan, and I haven't bought any previous seasons of
Perry Mason, so I might actually save some money this week.
I like Chelsea Handler though. Not sure if it's worth buying
Girls Behaving Badly just for her.

I have a confession to make: I always liked
Caroline in the City. Maybe it was because it was set in the world of cartooning, or that I liked the fact that Richard was sarcastic and morose, or maybe it's just that I've always thought that Lea Thompson was really cute. Anyway, the first season is out on DVD tomorrow, and I just might have to pick it up.
Another syndicated-writer show is on DVD for the first time tomorrow too:
Dave's World, the sitcom starring Harry Anderson that was based on the life and columns of Dave Barry. I miss Harry Anderson.
- Caroline in the City - Season 1
- Dave's World - Season 1
- Kenny vs. Spenny - Season 4
- The Love Boat - Season 1, Vol. 2

- The Superman/Aquaman Adventure Hour - DC Superheroes: Filmation Adventures
- That Girl - Season 4

Hell has officially frozen over. A DVD I expected never to exist finally has. The complete series of the television show
Quark is being released on DVD this coming October. This lost icon from the 1977-78 season was created by
Get Smart co-creator Buck Henry and lasted a grand total of eight episodes.
The show stars Richard Benjamin as the captain of a garbage-hauling spaceship who yearns to be given more important duties. The show is pretty much a satire of
Star Trek and parodies the standard plot devices of sci-fi television and movies up to that time (such as the concept of "evil" parallel universes). Conrad Janis (of
Mork and Mindy fame) is particularly funny as Otto Palindrome.
The show didn't last that long, but thanks to the Internet
fan sites of the show have sprung up enough to likely garner the attention of some executive looking to make some easy money (note I didn't say a quick Buck. That would have been too easy). Had it been made today...well, it probably still would have been canceled (particularly if it was on Fox), but the DVD release would have happened much sooner.

The original '80s
V miniseries is ingrained in my memory. In fact, when I was pregnant, I would get the inevitable question: do you want a boy or a girl? My pat answer was, "As long as it's not a lizard baby, we'll be happy."
If you watched
V, you know my reference, and it was fun when the askers got it too.
Beyond lizard babies, lovable aliens who went on to play Freddie Kreuger (
Robert Englund) and heroines imported from
The Greatest American Hero (
Faye Grant) -- I swear, I remember all of this; I didn't even look it up! --
V was so unique and addicting that if you haven't seen it, I suggest getting that DVD release tout de suite.

Hey, let's all mark our calendars, because it's a big day in the TV world. Now all the people who aren't watching
According to Jim on TV can
not watch it on DVD.
Season one of the
ABC comedy (it's a comedy, right?) will be released on Oct. 21, 2008. It's part of a deal ABC Studios inked with Lionsgate Home Entertainment to distribute select titles on DVD. Season one of
Reaper is next on Nov. 4, followed by
Boy Meets World (which was
discontinued in 2006),
Hope and Faith, and
8 Simple Rules.
That's interesting, because I've got Season one of
8 Simple Rules here (no, I didn't buy it, a publicist sent it to me), and it's from Buena Vista Home Entertainment. So Lionsgate must be taking over distribution.

Sometimes television shows come along that completely change the industry.
Spaced is one of those shows. Broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 from 1999 to 2001, it used geeky pop culture references, non sequitur scene injections, flashbacks and other common television practices nowadays way back when it wasn't cool to do so. In that respect, it's a combination of
The Big Bang Theory and
Arrested Development long before either existed.
When co-creators and co-stars Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (now Jessica Hynes) created the main characters Tim and Daisy, they created characters that every nerdy person could relate to.
The show does cater to a very specific audience and it's the sort of audience that tends to be the most loyal, even obsessively so. Nobody is particularly super-handsome and the characters are very niche. Also, the show doesn't really talk down to the audience and makes the viewer feel like part of the conversation. This is unlike, say,
Arrested Development which tends to be a bit pretentious (sorry to all you
Arrested Development fans).

Fa la la!
We told you last month about the new 20th anniversary DVD set for Mystery Science Theater 3000 that is going to be released later this year. The gang announced the details and the release date for the set yesterday at Comic-Con.
The 4 DVD set from Shout! Factory will be released on October 28 and will include four never-before-released movies: Laserblast, First Space on Venus, Werewolf, and Future War. Along with the movies will be tons of new interviews with everyone ever involved in the show, a documentary about the history of MST3K, footage of the Comic-Con Reunion panel, lobby cards, and even a collectible Crow T. Robot figurine! The set will come in a special 20th anniversary tin box (see pic above).

"We tell the stories others refuse to tell." - Richard "Ringo" Langly
Like many of you, I have a growning collection of DVD sets from shows that left the airwaves too soon. If I had to pick just one to have back, it would probably be Firefly, but The Lone Gunmen would certainly be in the conversation. It was a great example of a spin-off done right. After years of service, fighting the good fight, lending a hand to Mulder, the boys finally got their own gig. Melvin Frohike, Richard Langly, and Johy Byers weren't your typical prime-time, leading man, characters, and The Lone Gunmen wasn't your typical prime-time show.
